Socio-Economic Development of Marginalized Women

The 34 women served are those who are heads of households, who live in the slums of Madurai, and whose children were formerly engaged in child labor. They live in the slums along the railway lines in the city. The women will first receive motivation and skills training. Then, 10 women will receive loans of $190 for tiffin [lunch] stalls and ready-made garment sales, and 24 will receive $120 for other income-generating projects.

From Dr. R. Kannan’s site visit report, “Mrs. Devisriram is a master trainer of ready-made garments. GMPM has formed 10 self-help groups of slum women. The groups are meeting twice a month for savings and credit. They are maintaining individual pass books, accounts note book and minutes note. The proposed micro enterprises are suitable to the area in which they are dwelling and also according to their knowledge and skills.”
