Projects In Africa: Kamobo Friends Luminary Youth

KENYA - $4,950
Various Income-Generating Projects
Project Coordinator - Ms. Raynor Chelegat

Eighteen young women, members of Tuloi Yearly Meeting, are participating in this one-year project. Their focus is to bring two different tribes, Nandi and Luhya, together to address the issues affecting them such as vulnerability, unemployment and empowerment. For the last nine months, KFLY has been involved in small-scale businesses with funds they contribute among themselves. For this project members will engage in hair dressing, poultry, small-scale businesses (food vending, cell phone card sales), or milk sales. The project is managed by the chairlady, secretary, treasurer and four representatives from each group section. Anticipated economics are:

ACTIVITY LOAN MONTHLY INCOME
Hair Salon (4 women) $950 $1,510 ($375 per woman)
Milk sales (4 women) $540 $$550 ($140 per woman)
Vending (4 women) $770 $320 ($80 per woman)
Poultry (5 women) $585 $965 ($195 per woman)

From Aquavis’ site visit report, “KFLYG was formed primarily to fight unemployment with self-employment. The rate of youth unemployment in this country is very high, and is a desperate situation for young men and women. This is the only multi-ethnic group from the Luhya and Kalenjini communities in the Rift Valley. The group is based in an urban center that is surrounded by fertile farm lands. The projects they have chosen are viable and have available markets. The group is important for it will strengthen the young women’s capacity to organize and to learn effectively from each other and the community. Youth are a group who do not have their own assets and are as vulnerable as any women in African societies.
